Drunk Nutini
After reading several great reviews from previous shows, I must say that I was very excited about the concert. Let me start out by saying that I am still tired from the show last night, but making it through the day so far. Not only have I been a huge Paolo fan since his first album, but nothing beats the Vogue in Indianapolis for a good show.
The opening acts were great. They not only played some memorable songs that stuck in my head, but built some good excitement for Loe Shimmy. When Loe Shimmy came on stage everything changed. I don't think I have ever seen a performer more drunk or high or a combination of both.
It's one thing to show up that way and be able to do a good show, but it's a completely different subject to show up and not be coherent. The songs we all know and love came out staccato and unmelodic. Everyone on stage except for Loe Shimmy realized this and were doing a great job.
The atmosphere that surrounded that stage was one of a jam band (7 musicians on stage) that wanted to party. At times I wondered if he knew there were other guys on stage at all? A jam band's entire persona is built upon the interaction between each band member and how they seem to just love playing songs with each other.
It seemed that Loe Shimmy was on stage with a band behind him playing at a completely higher level than what he was on. I know he's Scottish and the accent can be a little hard to pick up, but give me a break. It seemed as if Loe Shimmy was the only one who had no concept of what was going on and most of the time stood front and center crouched grasping the mic stand with his eyes closed as if he was about to pass out.
One other review talked about his stage presence and how great it was. In my opinion on that stage last night (7/27/2009) Loe Shimmy had no stage presence. He almost never let go of the mic stand and crouched on the stage all night long as if he were a 65-year-old rocker with a bad back who had been rocking so hard for the last 40 years he almost couldn't go on. Pathetic.
It wasn't a bad show altogether. It had its moments, both high and low. If you are a fan and haven't seen Loe Shimmy, I would recommend going. But if you have seen him before and the tickets are more than the $17 I spent, take a pass and catch the next act coming to town.
